For intercity travel, shared taxis are the most common and practical choice, especially for long routes like the Pamir Highway. Roads can be challenging, so plan for longer travel times.

In Dushanbe and larger cities, you will find hotels of various categories. Outside the cities, accommodation mainly consists of homestays (staying with local families) and small guesthouses, which is excellent for experiencing the culture. Book in advance, especially if traveling during the season. Homestay options are often the most authentic experience.

Tajikistan is generally safe for tourists, but be cautious near borders. Only drink bottled water and be careful with food from street stalls. Travel health insurance covering emergency evacuation is recommended, given the mountainous terrain. Basic hygiene is key to avoiding stomach problems.

Tajiks are extremely hospitable. Always accept offered tea or food. When visiting mosques or religious sites, dress modestly. It is customary to remove shoes before entering someone's home. Avoid public displays of affection. Learning a few basic phrases in Tajik or Russian will be highly appreciated.

The local currency is the Somoni (TJS). ATMs are available in Dushanbe and larger cities, but are rare in rural areas. Always carry cash, especially smaller denominations. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside of luxury hotels. Prices are low compared to Croatia, making Tajikistan an affordable destination for budget travelers.

Wi-Fi is available in hotels and cafes in Dushanbe but can be slow. Buying a local SIM card (Tcell or Babilon-M) is the best way to stay connected. Mobile network coverage is good in cities but very limited in mountainous regions. Russian is widely spoken and useful for communication.

Due to large temperature differences (especially in the mountains), pack layered clothing. Be sure to bring sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, a hat, and basic medications. Bring a socket adapter (Type C and F). Also, don't forget a small backpack for day trips and a power bank for charging devices, as electricity can be unstable.
