The USA stages 11 of the venues, topped by the Final at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. Major hubs like Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston see heavy airline competition and are typically the lowest-cost US entry points. Most venues are high-capacity NFL stadiums adapted for soccer, with capacities of 60,000 to 82,000.

Three Mexican venues — Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey — anchor the Mexico leg. Travelers from Latin America generally find these the lowest-cost host destinations. Mexico City's Estadio Azteca is the world's only stadium to have hosted two World Cup finals (1970 and 1986), a singular piece of football heritage.

Trip Essentials

Visa & Entry
A $21 ESTA is required for Visa Waiver Program citizens, applied online at least 72 hours before departure. For non-VWP nationals a B1/B2 tourist visa is required, and processing typically takes weeks. Get the paperwork in early because tournament demand will be heavy.
No visa is required for most passports if you stay under 180 days. An FMM tourist permit is granted on arrival, or available online pre-departure. Attending matches in both Mexico and the US? You'll need separate entry permits for each.
Visa-exempt nationals need an eTA ($7 CAD, applied online). A full visa, where required, should be filed for early. Standard processing is fast; major events can lengthen the wait. The eTA is bound to the passport you applied with and lasts 5 years.
Currency & Costs
US Dollar (USD) is used. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost universally. Tipping is standard — 18-20% at restaurants and $1-2 per drink at bars. A casual-restaurant meal costs $15-25; fast food costs $8-15. Stadium concessions cost noticeably more.
The currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). US dollars are commonly accepted near tourist sites, though peso payments get better rates. 10-15% is the customary tip. A typical meal at local restaurants is $5-10 — Mexico is the most budget-friendly host. ATMs are widely available.
Canadian Dollar (CAD) is used. Cards, including contactless, are accepted across the board. Restaurants expect a 15-20% tip. Pricing is roughly on par with the US: $15-25 per meal. Note that price tags in Canada don't bake in tax, meaning your bill ends up 13-15% over the menu number.
Weather (June-July)
Climate varies sharply between host cities. Southern venues (Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C) are hot, humid affairs. The West Coast stays milder and drier: LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C. The East Coast runs warm and humid: New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C. Plan on sunscreen, a hat, and lots of water at open-air stadiums.
The rainy season starts in June. Altitude in Mexico City (2,200m) keeps days moderate at 25°C, with evenings turning markedly cooler. Pack layered clothes and a rain shell. Guadalajara and Monterrey run hotter at 30-33°C, and more humid. Expect frequent — but short — afternoon thunderstorms.
The country's prime weather season. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. Vancouver averages 22°C, sees up to 16-hour days, and gets little rainfall. Outdoor events feel comfortable in either city. Light layers are recommended for evening kickoffs.
Practical Info
Type A/B sockets, 120V. English is the main spoken language. Both Uber and Lyft work in all host cities. WiFi is generally free at hotels, cafes, and airports. An eSIM or airport-bought prepaid SIM handles mobile data. Public-transit quality differs widely — excellent in New York, limited in Dallas and Houston.
Power: Type A/B plugs at 127V (US-compatible). Spanish is the primary language though plenty of English is spoken in tourist districts and near the venues. Both Uber and DiDi cover all three host cities. Pick up a local SIM (Telcel or AT&T Mexico) at the airport for cheap data and calls.
Plugs are Type A/B at 120V (matching US). English is spoken in Toronto, English/French in Vancouver. Uber is available in both cities. Public transport is solid: TTC in Toronto and SkyTrain in Vancouver both serve the stadiums. For visitors, Canadian mobile plans are pricey — an eSIM or prepaid is the better play.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book World Cup 2026 flights from Croatia?

December 2025 through February 2026 is the cleanest EUR window from ZAG, SPU and DBV. Because every itinerary is a two-flight journey, cheap fare availability depends on inventory in both the short-haul European leg and the transatlantic leg — booking early is essential. For group-stage matches (11 to 27 June), lock fares by January. For knockout rounds through the 19 July final, December 2025 is safer, because Dalmatian summer tourism starts squeezing SPU and DBV outbound inventory from April onwards and the transatlantic hub legs see their own price surge as American demand picks up.

Which Croatian airport is best for a transatlantic trip?

Zagreb is best for fans in continental Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina — it has the most frequent and cheapest connections to European long-haul hubs. Split is efficient for Dalmatian fans during summer when SPU's European schedule peaks (more direct flights to Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Amsterdam in season), but summer tourism inflates pricing on the short-haul leg. Dubrovnik is the most expensive Croatian origin outside ZAG because of thin scheduling; for DBV fans, a short Croatia Airlines hop to Zagreb or Split plus onward long-haul routing is often cheaper than searching direct DBV fares.

Do Croatian citizens need ESTA or a visa?

Yes, ESTA — Croatia joined the US Visa Waiver Program in December 2021, so Croatian passport holders qualify for ESTA (USD 21, valid 2 years). Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before travel. Do not use copycat sites charging inflated fees. For Canada, Croatian citizens need eTA (CAD 7, valid 5 years) at canada.ca. For Mexico, no pre-arrival authorisation — a tourist permit is issued on arrival for up to 180 days. Check passport validity carefully; the USA requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay.

What is the best European hub to connect through from Croatia?

Vienna on Austrian Airlines is the shortest dog-leg for most Croatians and often offers competitive pricing. Frankfurt and Munich on Lufthansa open up the widest US network (10+ direct routes) and tend to win for US West Coast and Midwest venues. Amsterdam on KLM offers good Premium Comfort seat options and slightly cheaper pricing to New York and Atlanta. Istanbul on Turkish is the best price option for long-haul to US West Coast and Canada despite the longer routing — Turkish's 787 and 350 fleet offers strong seat pitch and food service. Paris on Air France is competitive for Canadian host cities via Toronto and Montreal.

Is it worth routing through Toronto for Croatian diaspora connections?

If your trip already includes Toronto as a match city, definitely — the Croatian community in Toronto (Mississauga, Hamilton, Etobicoke) is one of the largest outside Croatia, and Air Canada's Frankfurt-Toronto and Munich-Toronto flights typically have strong inventory and reasonable pricing. For fans planning to attend BMO Field matches specifically, a Zagreb-Frankfurt-Toronto itinerary on Lufthansa plus Air Canada is usually the cleanest option. Toronto also has cheap onward US domestic flights if you are combining Canadian and US matches — Porter Airlines and Air Canada Rouge serve most US host cities from Toronto.

How do Croatia Airlines Miles & More points work for redemptions?

Croatia Airlines uses Miles & More, the same programme as Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, LOT and Brussels Airlines. This gives Croatian fans access to Star Alliance transatlantic redemptions from Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and beyond. Points cost for economy to the US East Coast is typically 35,000 to 60,000 one-way during peak season plus taxes. Croatia Airlines co-branded cards (Zagrebačka Banka, PBZ American Express) let you top up slowly. For occasional fliers, combining a cash short-haul leg (ZAG-FRA) with a Miles & More long-haul redemption (FRA-USA) is often the best value.

Do I need travel insurance beyond Croatian HZZO coverage?

Yes, essential. HZZO and your EHIC card cover nothing in North America, and a US hospital admission can cost EUR 40,000 or more. Buy a tournament-length travel medical policy with at least EUR 300,000 cover (500,000 ideal for USA), trip cancellation, and baggage. Croatia Osiguranje, Allianz Zagreb and Adriatic Osiguranje all offer tournament-length policies from EUR 40 to 150. Confirm USA is explicitly covered (not optional) and that air-ambulance medical repatriation is included. Connection-failure cover matters more for two-leg itineraries from Croatia than it would for direct-flight origins.
